Researching Thomas Benedict's Ancestors
At this point in time the farthest back I can trace our line is to a John Benedict Sr. (1742), father of Benjamin Benedict (b.1774), father of Lindsey Benedict (b.1801), father of Samuel Benedict (b.1844), father of Thomas Benedict (b.1880), of Cutler, Illinois.
Publications about the Benedicts
The history of the first four generations of Benedicts in America was written in 1755 by Deacon James Benedict. Many of the facts were provided by his grandmother, Mary Bridgum, in the “Ridgefield Manuscript.”
“The Genealogy of Benedicts in America” by Henry Marvin, Benedict, published 1870 provides exstensive information about early Benedicts; however, many early male Benedicts are not recorded, including the ancestors of our Thomas Benedict of Cutler, Illinois.
In 1969 Elwyn Ellsworth Benedict published Volume 2 of the “Genealogy of the Benedicts in America” however, we cannot trace our ancestral line through this publication either. (Note, Elwyn Benedict is currently working on volume three. I am compiling our information and sending it to him for inclusion in his next book.)
